Celebrating CTE Month in the Highlands

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, a time to recognize the incredible ways our schools, communities, and businesses come together to support students in their journey toward successful careers. Here in the Highlands region—Putnam, Jackson, White, and Overton counties—CTE is more than just a program. It’s a community effort to empower students, create opportunities, and build a strong local workforce.

A Community That Invests in Its Students

In our four-county region, students don’t just learn in the classroom—they gain real-world experiences that prepare them for life beyond high school. Local schools, businesses, and community leaders work hand-in-hand to provide:

Mentorship and Career Coaching:

Educators and industry professionals help guide students in finding career paths that align with their interests and skills. Career coaches in each county work one-on-one with students to explore job opportunities, college programs, and technical training options.

Work-Based Learning (WBL) Opportunities:

Across Putnam, Jackson, White, and Overton counties, businesses open their doors to students through internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. This hands-on experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge in real work environments while making valuable industry connections.

Industry Certifications and Dual Enrollment:

Our schools ensure students can earn college credits and industry-recognized certifications before graduation. By doing so, they leave high school with a competitive edge—whether they choose to enter the workforce immediately or continue their education.

Annual CTE Banquets & Student Recognition:

Each year, Highlands Economic Partnership and local leaders celebrate student achievements at the Annual CTE Banquets. These events not only recognize outstanding students but also strengthen the bond between schools, businesses, and the community.

Why This Matters

When students succeed, our communities thrive. CTE programs help prepare young people for high-demand, high-wage careers in healthcare, manufacturing, information technology, agriculture, and beyond. By working together, Putnam, Jackson, White, and Overton counties are ensuring students have the skills, confidence, and support they need to build bright futures—right here at home.

At Highlands Economic Partnership, we are proud to work alongside schools, businesses, and local leaders to continue building a strong, skilled workforce.

Together, we’re shaping the future of the Highlands region—one student at a time.
